obscenity [24 Mar 2006|09:17pm]
Basically, as it stands, canadian customs officials are taking it into their own hands to deem what is "acceptable" for Canadians to read, and what is not. Much of this literature that's being targetted is anything having to do with homosexuality, or even any literature that has nothing to do with sexuality at all, but is being sent to a store that also sells homosexual literature in Vancouver. They won their argument against the Supreme Court in the 90s, which stemmed from the same problem earlier that decade, but that ruling has not been effective in stopping customs officials from stalling or banning materials they come across.

It's ridiculous that this decision is being left in the hands of biased, uninformed officials. If you care, you can help to donate to Little Sister's Book Emporium, which is taking Customs back to court this April and needs money to cover their legal costs. Read more below.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Spring 2006 - Update

The Supreme Court of Canada is scheduled to hear arguments regarding the funding (advance costs order reinstated) of the case on April 19, 2006.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since we started this court challenge in 1986, through the various levels of court, and in preparing thousands of pages of research and evidence, Little Sister's has spent over half a million dollars.

Much of the money spent was generously donated by individual Canadians, by institutions and companies, and by concerned readers, writers, and defenders of intellectual freedom worldwide. Without this moral and financial support, this trial would never have been heard in the first place.

The battle is not over though, and Little Sister's must now raise funds estimated around $150,000. What lies before us is the historic first "test case" in the courts against Canada Customs since our Supreme Court of Canada victory. Your donations help us to continue the fight against censorship in Canada, and to let our government know that its citizens will not be branded "obscene" in word, picture, or deed.

Donations of any amount will help us to confront and critique the censors under new laws, in a new century. Little Sister's has already shown that the laws of this land have been used to oppress the expression rights of some Canadians. Now is the time for all Canadians to end this clumsy and paranoid interference at the hands of bureaucrats supposedly intended to protect our border from the more pressing issues of our times.

Your donation goes directly to cover costs associated with our continuing censorship battle against Canada Customs. Donations are forwarded directly to the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association, who will provide a tax receipt for donations of $10.00 or more.

Make your cheque payable to: "Little Sister's Defense Fund".

the osgoode library is an intimidating maze [14 Mar 2006|05:38pm]
Today my sociology prof handed back our major essays, and i got a goddamn 92! Holla! For some reason I cared alot about that one, and finding out I got that mark takes a huge pressure off me for the rest of the term.

Also, yesterday I got a reply about the Corner Gas job in Regina this summer, and it seems like they're interested... alot of their decision is weighed on the candidates' roots in Saskatchewan so I think I have a good chance since the majority of my family lives out there. It would be such a good opportunity, between the actual internship, and having time to visit my Great Gramma and all of my other relatives. I would also like to get more in tune with the history out there, and yes, my metis roots. No joke, no sarcasm. Qu'Appelle and Hubbard is where my Grandpa grew up, alot of metis history is there, and I would like to learn more about things that have gone off the radar as far as history goes like the Cypress Hills massacre, etc.

I'm keeping my toes and fingers crossed.

In other news... I love this apartment. I also can't wait to see the results of Vanessa and Marika's photoshoot of Alex's clothing line. I came home Saturday night to find Trisha and her friend dressed to the nines, and a fridge full of beer that Marika had provided as compensation for using my house for the shoot.... uhhh the sight of Trish alone was amazing. Yowza yowza.

i worked with sarah all day today, good tymezzz. glennie tattooed alice cooper eyes on andrew, they are nice.

on the way back to school from work the pedal on my bike broke off. it either needs to be sautered back on, if possible, or i'm going to need to put an entirely new crank on it. also, my brakes don't work well in the rain, my shoes are going to be fucked soon if i need to keep using them to stop/trying to bike with one pedal.

last night everyone at riot practice had gas. i think it was the pizza. we were toots and the maytals, but all toots no mays or tals.

last night alex came over and watched mystery science theatre the movie with me and kaytee. i love alex because we can talk about sci-fi and know neither one of us is judgemental of the others' beleif in the paranormal.

the denver airport was mentioned in MST and that almost got me going on my rant about the conspiracy there with the masonic symbology and NWO. Heyyooooo.

today is my uber-long school day. usually just 9-6, but today will extend to 11pm or later because of a practice for RIOT. RIOT is a sketch-comedy show written and directed by people in radio and tv arts (my program) that i'm doing audio for, and you should come see it if you enjoy laughing.
